Receding Gums - Berkely, CA

Gum Recession Causes

Gum recession has been linked to a number of oral health issues and may be the result of the following:

• Periodontal disease
• Genetics
• Tooth brushing habits
• Dental hygiene
• Hormones
• Tobacco product use

Seek Treatment for Receding Gums

If you have gum disease that has led to gum recession, you may notice your teeth becoming very sensitive. Receding gums are a common problem that should be evaluated by Dr. Keith Chertok. However, many people do not realize their oral health is at risk until they experience severe symptoms. Signs and symptoms of gum recession include:

• Very sensitive teeth
• Teeth appear longer than normal
• Notch is forming near the gum line

If you notice any of these conditions, set up an appointment with Dr. Chertok as soon as possible.

Gum Recession Causes

Your gums can pull back or wear away for several reasons. Some of the common causes of gum recession include:

• Gum Disease – This is an infection in the mouth that can destroy the gum tissue and bone, eventually causing loose teeth and tooth loss if left untreated.
• Genetics - Approximately 30 percent of adults are at risk of developing gum disease because of a genetic predisposition.
• Tooth Brushing Habits - Using the wrong tooth brushing technique or toothbrush can wear down the gums.
• Poor Dental Care – If you are not maintaining regular dental care or getting the treatment you need, you may be at risk for developing gum disease and receding gums.
• Hormones - Changing hormones can affect the gums.
• Tobacco Products - Smoking and chewing tobacco can increase plaque formation and lead to gum recession.
• Bruxism - Clenching and grinding the teeth can cause gum recession.
• Misalignment - Crooked or misaligned teeth can put more stress on certain parts of the mouth and negatively impact the gums.
• Body Jewelry - Lip and tongue piercings can wear down the gum tissue.
• Orthodontic Treatments - Shifting teeth or wearing dental appliances can affect the gum tissue, occasionally leading to recession.

Since the gums do not grow back after they have been damaged, it is important to seek treatment as soon as you notice any warning signs of gum disease. Schedule your consultation with Dr. Chertok in Berkeley, CA today!
