Many people avoid going to the dentist because they experienced traumatic care as a child, suffered painful procedures as an adult, or are influenced by the stereotypes they see on TV and in movies. Even when they experience warning signs like pain in the mouth, many people avoid seeking treatment because of the fear they experience. At our office, we understand these feelings and want to help. Whether you just need a routine cleaning or a brand-new smile, we offer sedation dentistry to make your experience comfortable and relaxing.
Sedation dentistry is used by many dentists to provide a relaxing, calming experience for patients who are afraid of going to the dentist and/or having dental procedures performed. There are many forms of sedation that can be administered in a variety of ways offering us the flexibility of three levels of sedation – minimal, moderate, and deep – depending on the level of anxiety the patient experiences.
Patients who suffer anxiety at the mere thought of sitting in the dentist’s chair can rest comfortably during an appointment at our office with the following sedation options:
At our Berkeley office, we offer several sedation options tailored to your comfort level: oral sedation, IV conscious sedation (by request), nitrous oxide (laughing gas), local anesthetic, and Oraqix®. Each option helps manage dental anxiety while allowing safe, effective care.
With oral sedation, you take a prescribed pill about an hour before your visit. By the time you arrive, you’ll feel calm and drowsy. You’ll stay awake but deeply relaxed while your dentist completes treatment. Most patients remember very little afterward and feel at ease throughout.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is inhaled and offers mild, fast-acting relaxation during procedures. IV sedation is stronger and delivered through a vein, allowing the dentist to adjust the dosage in real time. While you’re awake with IV sedation, you’ll have little or no memory of the procedure.
Yes. All sedation methods used in our practice are FDA-approved and closely monitored. During procedures, we track vital signs like heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels to ensure complete safety and comfort at every step.
Patients often choose sedation due to fear of dental procedures, past traumatic experiences, trouble getting numb, a strong gag reflex, or very sensitive teeth. Sedation makes complex or long treatments feel manageable and stress-free.
Absolutely. Oral sedation and nitrous oxide require no needles and are ideal for patients with needle phobia. These options reduce anxiety and make visits far more comfortable—even for routine cleanings.
It depends on the type of sedation. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation keep you awake but relaxed. With IV sedation, you’ll be conscious but won’t remember much afterward. All options are designed to eliminate discomfort and fear.
Delaying treatment due to fear can lead to serious oral health issues like tooth decay, infection, or gum disease. Sedation dentistry offers a safe way to get the care you need—without stress or pain.
Your dentist will review your medical history, treatment plan, and level of anxiety to recommend the best option. Whether you need mild relaxation or deeper sedation, there’s a solution that fits your needs.
