Stages of the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®)

LANAP® gives Dr. Keith Chertok the ability to save loose teeth that might otherwise need to be extracted because of tooth decay or other oral health problems. The steps of the procedure include:

• Measurement of Pocket Depths
• Removal of Bacteria with Laser
• Calculus Removal
• Creation of a Clot
• Gum Tissue Recompression
• Bite Adjustment

Laser Gum Surgery

gum disease in Berkeley, CA

The steps of the laser periodontal disease treatment are as follows:

A)  Pocket measurement. As an important first step, this involves measuring the depths of your periodontal pockets with a small dental ruler. These measurements provide us with information regarding the amount of attachment loss that has occurred.

B)  Bacteria removal with the laser. We use pulsed laser light to get rid of bacteria and diseased tissue without damaging healthy tissue. This is a minimally invasive process and causes little to no discomfort for the patient.

C)  Calculus removal. Dr. Chertok will use ultrasonic scalers to remove calculus, or tartar, deposits from underneath the gum line. The laser helps to denature the calculus for easier removal.

D)  Clot formation. The laser is passed over the area a second time to stimulate the soft tissue, root, and bone. The clot that forms here creates a sticky seal around the tooth and helps the healing process.

E)  Gum tissue recompression. The gum tissue is recompressed along the surface of the tooth and no stitches are necessary.

F)  Bite adjustment.
Dr. Chertok will need to adjust your bite to make sure there is no trauma to the teeth.

If you think you may have periodontal disease or you have symptoms such as gum recession, bad breath, or bleeding gums, schedule a consultation with your Berkeley periodontist, Dr. Chertok, as soon as possible. We can provide more information about LANAP® and determine whether you are a good candidate for this minimally invasive periodontal disease treatment.
