Restore Your Facial Appearance with Implants!

Most patients with missing teeth experience some degree of bone loss and over time, this can affect the facial appearance. Significant bone loss may limit our ability to restore the smile with dental implants or implant supported dentures. Dr. Keith Chertok in Berkeley, CA may recommend a bone grafting procedure or bone augmentation to replace lost bone.

Bone Loss Occurs After Tooth Loss

Bone loss in the jaw occurs when one or more teeth have been lost due to gum disease, tooth decay, trauma to the mouth, or injury to the jaw area. If you do not have a tooth in place to stimulate the jaw bone, the bone can begin to deteriorate.

Bone Graft in Berkeley, CA

The jaw bone starts to deteriorate when there is no tooth to stimulate the jaw bone, and too much bone loss means there is not enough bone available to support dental implants. Dr. Chertok may recommend a bone grafting procedure to restore lost bone and prepare the site for dental implants.

The three types of bone grafting procedures are:

• Autogenous grafts – These grafts involve taking bone from one area of the body, most often the chin, and transplanting it to the area in need.

• Allografts - The transplanted bone is derived from a bone bank and the bone material is screened for safety.

• Xenografts - The bone for these grafts comes from a bovine, or cow, and may be preferred when a patient needs extra bone for a dental implant procedure.

Bone Graft Procedure

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and may involve removing some of the bone and bone marrow for the transplant. Bone marrow and bone grafting material are placed around the grafting site to speed up the healing process, and the site is secured with sutures. Patients may need to take antibiotics and pain medication post-procedure.

Even if you have suffered bone loss in the mouth, you may still benefit from dental implant placement. If you think you may be a good candidate for dental implants, schedule your consultation in Berkeley, CA with Dr. Chertok today!
